Ocean Wave Height

When planning ocean voyages, we sought information about the maximum wave heights occurring in specific areas during certain months of the year. Particularly, when preparing to cross the Atlantic during the summer months, we were interested in the maximum reach of dangerous waves generated by hurricanes. 

The charts display the maximum wave heights in meters (significant height of combined wind waves and swell) recorded in specific areas during each month from 1940 to 2023.

The data for creating charts was downloaded in the form of GRIB files from the site: https://cds.climate.copernicus.eu

To automate the downloading and visualization of data, we wrote appropriate R language scripts based on the wgrib library, which can be downloaded here: GRIB.zip
